Cavity or dental caries is the irreversible degradation of the organic as well as inorganic components of the teeth. Unlike some early stages of mineral loss, an established cavity involves permanent loss of tooth structure and generally requires dental treatment.

What Are the Symptoms of a Cavity?

Depending on how advanced the decay is, symptoms may include:

Tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
Toothache or spontaneous pain
A visible hole or dark spot on the tooth
Pain while biting or chewing
Food getting trapped between teeth
Swelling around the tooth in advanced cases
Bad taste or pus if an infection or dental abscess develops

Some cavities may cause no symptoms in their early stages, which is why regular dental checkups are important.

Can a Cavity Be Prevented?

Good oral hygiene can significantly reduce the risk of cavities. Important preventive measures include:

Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
Rinsing your mouth after every meal.
Including more fiber rich food items in diet
Including probiotics like home made curd and cheese in your daily diet
Cleaning between the teeth regularly with floss or interdental cleaners
Limiting frequent consumption of sugary foods and drinks
Limiting processed foods
Drinking water regularly
Having routine dental examinations and professional cleanings when recommended
